Abstract

  1. This case study explores characteristics of the top most retweeted tweets (n=1,032) shared during the 2014 NFL player Ray Rice domestic abuse case. A content analysis of the posts revealed that the tweets expressed opinions rather than communicated facts. Regarding sentiment, negative tweets were most common. Finally, regression analysis showed that there were five predictors of a tweet’s popularity: The number of followers of the originating tweeter, the number of tweet favorites; whether the Twitter account of the poster was verified; whether a URL was included and if Ray Rice was personally attacked in the tweet.
