Abstract

Efforts like Profile 21, Manufacturing 21, and Curricula 2000 have researched the needs and deficiencies in manufacturing education. However, much remains to be done in providing students with a global view of manufacturing systems. Academia, like industry, suffers from functional isolation. Students are often tossed over the wall from `engineering materials' to `engineering design' to `manufacturing' without much interaction between different areas.
