N2 - Bloodstream infection, or sepsis, is a major cause of death in intensive care units. Clinical intervention is extremely challenging, with rapid onset of complications leading to multisystemic failure. Recent research has shown that tight regulation of blood glucose levels may dramatically lower mortality rates. yet, current capability in regulating glucose in a septic patient is inadequate, relying heavily on clinical personnel and manual methods. This prompts the need to develop a system for automated blood glucose monitoring and control of infused insulin rate. This paper proposes a mechatronic design augmentation to currently used clinical components to achieve such system.
