Ms. Brown’s research interest involves developing “creative pedagogy,” a term she uses to define a flexible
teaching methodology that emphasizes finding common ground with students. Creative pedagogy is based on
an asset-building, strength-promoting philosophy of teaching. It increases capacity in students by hooking
new knowledge onto what students already know. Ms. Brown scaffolds assignments and develops coherent
courses that show students connections among what they know, what they are learning, and how concepts
link to future requirements. Ms. Brown’s training in secondary education, especially in English Language Arts,
has provided her with many tools to work with developing writers. She engages students using diverse
strategies modified from theater, speech, art, language arts, group facilitation, and adult training practices.
