About
Giuseppe Turini received the M.Sc. in Computer Science from the University of Pisa (Italy) in 2004, and in the
same year he joined to the Visual Computing Lab of the CNR-ISTI in Pisa (Italy). Then in 2005, he started
working as a research fellow at the EndoCAS Research Center in Computer Assisted Surgery of the University
of Pisa, and in 2011 he received the Ph.D. in Health Technologies (Comp. Eng.) from the University of Pisa.
Since 2012 he is an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at Kettering University (Flint, Michigan, USA), but
he continues the collaboration with the EndoCAS Research Center as a visiting research associate.
His main research interests are: computer graphics visualization, interactive physics simulation, virtual and
augmented reality, computer vision, and serious game development. All these research activities are carried
out in the fields of computer-assisted and robotic surgery, medical imaging, surgical training, pre-operative
planning, and intra-operative navigation.
Dr. Turini’s teaching philosophy is focused on learning the content of his courses while fostering critical
thinking and problem-solving skills. All of his courses include a mix of theory and practice designed to make
the classroom an active learning environment, with frequent open discussions and brainstorming sessions.
Students are usually involved in both individual and team projects, to encourage them to become both
independent thinkers/learners and team players, with good work ethics.
